Firing cost calculator
What does a firing really cost?
Three steps with your own numbers: cost per firing, cost per kilo, price per piece. Nothing is saved.
1. What does one firing cost?
Power rating is on the kiln's type plate. Firing time runs from start to end of programme. The load factor is a rule of thumb, because the kiln does not run at full power the whole time.
What belongs in besides electricity
2. What does a kilo cost, and what do you charge?
The cost per firing spreads across the pieces inside. A half-empty kiln costs twice as much per kilo. Enter what you charge per kilo today and see what is left.
For reference: studios in Germany typically charge €6 to €18 per kilo for a glaze firing and €3 to €12 for a bisque firing.
3. So what does a plate cost?
Your price from step 2, applied to one piece. This is exactly how WheelOwl calculates at the kiln: with rounding up, minimum price and included allowance, if you switch them on.
